Research and other activities

  1. A study of the dopaminergic system and its interaction with other neurotransmitter systems, at the level of receptors and secondary messages, in brain regions of animal models of neurodegeneration and in hypothyroidism.
  2. A study of oxidative status and the association of epilepsy, neurodegeneration, aging and/or electromagnetic radiation (50 Hz) with oxidative stress, by determining levels of oxidative stress markers (lipid peroxidation levels (malondialdehyde, MDA levels) and protein oxidation levels) and thiol redox state (TRS) (glutathione (GSH), glutathione disulfide (GSSG) levels, cysteine (CSH) levels, of protein (P) thiols (PSH) and protein and non-protein (NP) disulfides (PSSR, NPSSR, PSSC, NPSSC, PSSP)) and/or the activity of major antioxidant enzymes (catalase, superoxide dismutase (SOD), non-specific peroxidases (NSPX) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) before and after administration of antioxidants (N-acetylcysteine (NAC), melatonin, vitamin C, α-lipoic acid, 2-deoxy-D-glucose, 3-O-methyl-D-glucose, etc.), in brain areas or organs of normal experimental animals, epilepsy models (pentylenetetrazol (PTZ) and pilocarpine model), in the weaver dopaminergic neurodegeneration model, in normal aging and after the effect of electromagnetic radiation (50 Hz) in mice.
  3. A study of mechanisms of neurodegeneration and neuroprotection of nigrostriatal neurons in the model of dopaminergic denervation (weaver muscle), after administration of neuroprotective substances (N-acetylcysteine, 17β-estradiol, aspirin) and the neurosteroid BNN 20 or (17-beta-spiro-[5-androsten -17,2′-oxiran]-3beta-ol), a synthetic analog of dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), which crosses the blood-brain barrier and lacks endocrine side effects.
  4. A Study of behavioral indicators (anxiety behavior with the open field test) and acetylcholinesterase activity (activity of the two acetylcholinesterase isoforms (G1 and G4)), after seizures (PTZ model), before and after the administration of antioxidants (rutin, N-acetylcysteine, melatonin, 3-O-methyl-glucose, etc.), and with increasing age (13-14 days to 15-16 months), in mouse brain areas.
  5. A study of superoxide radical and hydroxyl radical quantification, and determination of DNA damage in brain and organs (liver, heart, kidney, lung, spleen and intestine) of young and old male and/or female
