Ph.D. position on modelling insect life cycle
The objective of this Ph.D. research project will be to develop a general Dynamic Energy Budget (DEB) model framework for insects with the aim of understanding the impact of stressors and various environmental gradients on the life cycle of insects, population dynamics and distribution.
DEB theory provides a modeling framework which makes possible to represent the complete life cycle of an individual organism as a function of food and temperature and to predict its life history traits (e.g., growth, development, reproduction). The objectives will be to a) update existing Dynamic Energy Budget (DEB) models to adequately capture the impact of chemicals and temperature on insect life cycle, e.g., changes in duration of developmental stages (delays/acceleration), b) to develop DEB based toxicokinetics-toxicodynamics models and c) generate modeling framework for studying effects of stressors on pest insects.
We are looking for a highly qualified and motivated candidate holding a M.Sc. degree in biological or agricultural or a related field of science. Knowledge of insect biology will be considered as advantage. The candidate should have experience with mathematical modeling of biological systems, or an interest in studying, learning, and contributing to this area, good programming skills (R, Matlab or Python), scientific writing in English.
The Ph.D. will be hosted at the Biology Department of the University of Crete and supervised by Prof. Konstadia Lika. The PhD position is expected to start between December 2021 and January 2022.
